Pruning isn't simply about cutting plants back. Done at the right time and in the right way, it encourages healthy growth, improves flowering, maintains shape and can give established plants a new lease of life. Done at the wrong time, it can mean losing this year's flowers, damaging new growth or taking years to recover.
At NPK Garden Services, we take a plant-led approach to pruning. Before reaching for the secateurs, We consider what the plant is, how it grows, when it flowers, its condition and what you're hoping to achieve. Because sometimes the best thing you can do for a plant is not prune it at all.
There is no single rule for when a garden should be "cut back". Different plants need completely different treatment, and even two plants of the same variety may need a different approach depending on their age, health, position and growing conditions.
Our horticultural knowledge means your plants are treated individually rather than everything being cut back at once simply because the gardener happens to be there.
Whether you have mature shrubs that have become too large, plants that have stopped flowering well, an established garden that needs careful management or simply aren't sure what should be pruned and when, we'll help you decide what your garden actually needs.
Mature gardens often contain plants that have taken many years to establish — and replacing them isn't always possible or desirable.
Our pruning services can include:
• Ornamental shrubs
• Roses
• Hydrangeas
• Wisteria
• Climbers
• Small ornamental trees
• Fruit bushes
• Established hedges
• Overgrown shrubs
• Perennials and seasonal cutting back
• Renovation pruning where appropriate
Where possible, our aim is to work with established plants rather than automatically remove and replace them.
That's particularly important to the NPK philosophy.
Sometimes what looks like a pruning problem isn't a pruning problem at all.
A plant that's struggling may be in the wrong position, receiving too much or too little light, competing with surrounding plants or growing in unsuitable soil.
A shrub that isn't flowering may have been pruned at the wrong time previously.
And an overgrown border may need selective pruning, dividing, moving and reshaping rather than simply cutting everything down.
We look at the garden as a whole before recommending what should be done.

Knowing when to prune is every bit as important as knowing how.
Some plants benefit from winter pruning while dormant. Others need attention after flowering. Some should be pruned in summer, and there are plants that are best left completely alone at particular times of year.
Rather than giving every garden an annual haircut, we can create a seasonal approach to caring for your shrubs and plants throughout the year.
This is particularly useful for larger and established gardens containing a wide variety of plants.
An overgrown shrub doesn't necessarily need to come out.
Many established plants can be carefully renovated over time, retaining their character while improving their shape, health and relationship with the rest of the garden.
Where appropriate, Sean can advise whether a plant should be reduced, rejuvenated gradually, moved, divided or left alone.
For customers who have inherited an established garden, this can be particularly valuable.
Before ripping everything out, let's find out what's actually growing there.
For customers who want their garden cared for throughout the year, pruning can form part of our ongoing Premium Garden Care service.
Instead of having someone visit simply to complete a list of maintenance jobs, We keep an eye on how the garden is developing and identify what needs attention as the seasons change.
This works particularly well for customers with larger gardens who prefer to book NPK for longer visits or full days, allowing enough time to care for the garden properly rather than rushing from one one-hour appointment to another.
NPK Garden Services is based in Bromsgrove and provides specialist garden care across Bromsgrove and surrounding Worcestershire villages, including Barnt Green, Dodford, Blackwell, Lickey, Alvechurch and surrounding areas.
We particularly welcome enquiries from owners of established and larger gardens looking for knowledgeable, ongoing garden care.
You don't need to know the names of everything growing in your garden or arrive with a list of jobs.
